Homeless Women With Sons

Homeless Women With Sons

A former resident of You Can Make It has committed to returning to the shelter as a motivational speaker.  Ms. Grayson feels passionate about the importance of educating the public about the real struggles of homeless women and children.  She wants people to realize how vital it is for these families to get the support that they so desperately need.  The following is her latest installment to our YCMI blog.

If a homeless woman with children has a son over the age of 15 she will not be placed into a shelter, because most shelters will not take boys over 15 due to sexual issues.  Then the homeless woman with children has to decide if she will be able to split up her family or can they all remain in the same place.

Most shelters has a 4 to 6 month program whilt they try to find the woman and children housing. If housing is not found then the family will be placed into another shelter.  If the homeless woman with children has an open DCFS case she will be able to get housing a little faster than a woman with children that does not have an open DCFS case.

You Can Make It is a hand up for many who otherwise fall through the cracks of bureaucracy.  Many do not qualify for Entitlement Programs need assistance as they strive to obtain life and employment skills.  Women with sons have an especially hard time.

This is true about homeless women with sons. However, I know the plight of homeless women with special needs children, specifically autistic ones, is even more severe.

More children are diagnosed with autism than any other childhood condition, and boys are 4 times more likely to be diagnosed with autism than girls.

Shelters, like other organizations that serve women and children, should be equipped and make accommodations for children with autism (or any other special need) as they, too, may be homeless, simply because their single mother may not be able to work because of her role as primary caregiver.
